Today we’re going to talk about the RELETTERING PROCESS, what that means, and provide some examples!
The great ‘RELETTERING’ conquest!
We’ve made a big deal about the fact that this campaign is anchored foundationally to the full relettering of the graphic novel. That’s all fine and good to say, but most of you probably need more detail to truly understand the depth and breadth of the process.
When the vast majority of the content for TFN was created, we (Insym as an entity) were utilizing different stylings and grammatical rules. The word balloons were avantgarde, colored, and fancy. Even the smallest text had outlines. Proper punctuation was few and far between. Over the years our design choices have improved, and our desire to fight against what we see as pointless comic-based rules (that exist nowhere else in grammar) waned.
When it came time to get some reprints done of our nearly out-of-stock volume, we knew it was time to put the skills, knowledge, and customs that we’d obtained and developed over the past few years to use.
Here are some examples of the BEFORE and AFTER of the relettered pages from THE COMPLETE LEGENDARY SAGA:
In the examples above you see some simplification of the word balloon coloring, some changes in positioning, and then even some ‘show font’ changes to a more readable one for headers.
The page above maneuvers some text to help with the ‘eye flow’ across the panels. There are quite a few dialogue changes, plus punctuation fixes.
The above panel takes an intentionally chaotic scene and cleans it up, while also making the word balloons more readable.
We hope you can see that this was not a simple undertaking. This process meant every single page, every single word, needed to go through the editing process all over again. Yes, it took time, but we feel it was time well spent for you, our supporters and fans of our work.
