WHAT ARE WE CONSUMING? Episode #5
Today we talk METAL MUSIC, Steph takes a trip to the MIDNIGHT LIBRARY (book review), and we have a SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT about some stuff of OURS for you to consume as well!
It’s time for another full episode of WHAT ARE WE CONSUMING (EPISODE #5), where #TeamInsym’s Matt & Steph talk about the things that have crossed our ears and eyes in recent days, so let’s get right down to it (NOTE - Hang around until the end for a VERY special announcement from us!):
METAL MUSIC GALORE!
(#TeamINSYM’s Matt) After stating that FELIX MARTIN’S THE GATHERING was now the baseline that all album’s would be judged on for this year, PORTUGAL’S Gaerea and ITALY’s FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE have gone ahead and dropped some absolute BANGERS.
The next few songs have been pummeling my ears in recent days:
FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE - I Can Never Die (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
One of the most impactful live shows I’ve ever been to was FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, just before they released LABYRINTH. This was many many years ago, but at that time I repetitively listened to this album and AGONY more than any other. Since then, they’d fallen off my radar. They’ve had many releases, but nothing hit me like those earlier albums… until now. As soon as I heard the opening track on OPERA (the above song), I knew this was going to be a return to old, and wooooooboy this song brings them back to their glory years. Oh, happy, glorious repetitive listening for me!
Gaerea - "Unknown" (Official Music Video)
The masked masters from Portugal are back with another infectious shredfest. Who cares who’s under the masks, they produce magic!
FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE - Morphine Waltz (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO)
Oh, you thought I was done with Fleshgod Apocalypse? No sirs and ma’am I am NOT! This one brings some fun and melody that truly feels like an extension of LABYRINTH, but gives female vocalist Veronica the first opportunity to front the extreme side of the band.
There’s SO MUCH good new music coming out, that the NEXT WIWC is already taking shape, but for now, I’m turning this over to STEPH for her next audio book review!
STEPH TAKES A TRIP TO ‘THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY’ (Audio Book Review)
For the last year or so, I’ve been on a mystery/thriller kick when it comes to the books that I consume (in this case listen to, since I’m an audiobook girl). These types of stories work well for me when I’m running, because they hold my attention as I find myself making an effort to hone in on the nuances that may lead to figuring out the “who, what, and why”.
Every now and then, though, I like a departure from mayhem and murder, and enjoy being transported to a story that’s more fantastical or dramatic in nature. So, when a book that’s been on my TBR (“to be read”) list popped up the other day, I jumped at the chance to dive into something different…and boy, am I glad I did.
The Midnight Library, written by Mat Haig, bore itself into my heart from the first few lines, and is something I’ve been thinking about since I finished it, which isn’t always the case for me. I can’t even fully convey what this story meant to me at this particular junction in my life, but it absolutely was what I needed to consume right now.
The audiobook is narrated by Carey Mulligan, who does an excellent job in holding the listener’s attention. The Midnight Library tells the story of Nora, who is at an impasse in her life, and resorts to desperate measures to take away the pain of those complications. What happens next is not what she expects, however, as she’s transported to a library full of books that hold an infinite number of possible scenarios her life could have taken, had she made a different decision than the one she did in her previous life. All she has to do is pick a book with a specific outcome, open it up, and then be immediately transported to that potential life.
To say more about how this story unfolds would be an injustice to anyone who is curious in experiencing it. This very well could be my favorite book of the year, mostly because of the profound impact it had on me in regards to the map of our lives, and how we view the decisions we’ve made. It’s beautifully written, poignant, emotional, and relatable. Trigger warning - this does deal with scenes involving suicide, although it does not go into graphic detail.
I’ll be shocked if this isn’t picked up to be a streaming series at some point. I hope it is, because this is a story that I feel everyone could find familiarity and comfort in, and will leave you contemplating your life’s path long after the book is finished.
You can find The Midnight Library through Amazon or Audible, and through other various audiobook sites such as Libby.
