WHY DO WE CROWDFUND?
We know many of you, unfamiliar with Kickstarter and the expenses behind producing a comic project, may be wondering why you see so many creatives utilizing the platform. It’s a valid question that needs to be answered. Let’s just be real: There’s not a whole lot of money going around to support creative endeavors. The cost of attending conventions is getting completely out of control (even if you’re a guest), and the hopes for most to sell enough to cover costs or… gasp… make a profit is becoming tougher and tougher. Royalties from titles licensed to publishers are nice, but they rarely have much significance.
On top of that, the expenses just to create a comic or graphic novel project are HUGE. To be able to keep producing these projects for you, the funds have to come from somewhere, and this is why crowdfunding is so important. Campaigns like this give US the ability to not only offset some the costs, but it allows us to create exactly what you, the supporters, desire, as well as to offer special experiences and value for your hard earned dollar. This is why we always give the opportunity for you to see your name in the book, the ability to get drawn in, and other more targeted merch options so that you feel like you’re getting something personally collectible.
So when you see someone pitching their crowdfunding campaign, just know that its being done not for vanity’s sake, but to help obtain funds so that we can keep that creative train rolling.
And if you’ve never used KICKSTARTER before, the funds you pledge don’t come out until the end of the campaign. So even if you’re like ‘I’d love to back this NOW, but I don’t get paid until Friday’, it’s all good because you won’t get charged until the 29th! Commit now, pay later!
