PORTAL INTO THE PAST: The first CROSSOVER video: LOVELORN BETRAYAL
We reveal some never before discussed behind the scenes notes on our most popular video that ties HEIRS OF ISILDUR to TALES FROM NOCTURNIA!

Leading up to this, we’re counting down all of our music video releases to this point. Next up is our most ambitious video to date: LOVELORN BETRAYAL!
The third and final video released as a part of THE CROSSROADS CONUNDRUM album and illustrated novel story arc, was also the most ambitious. Once again, the video was produced by Hulyan Minosso out of STUDIO PONTILHADO in Brazil, but this time, we created art that was specifically designed for the video itself.
LOVELORN BETRAYAL is the story of a star-crossed King (Lovelorn / Lucien), his queen (Gwyndolynna), their right hand man (Xarek), and a multitude of tragedies that follow them. This video was created to reinforce the backstory of Lovelorn (as he’s called in Heirs of Isildur) after he was called through a portal into the Heirs of Isildur / Shadow’s Haven universe. It was storyboarded and scripted similar to a comic / movie. The main difference was the artist (Javi) had to create all layers of the art separately, so the background had to be a fully drawn and colored with the character layers separate, so that there could be movement on the screen. After the video was completed, panels were then used in the illustrated novel / comic version of the story.
So what are some quick hitter facts you might not know about this video?
This video, at its’ origin, was only meant to be a backstory for King Lovelorn. Obviously there had to be some building blocks for a Nocturnia universe set up, but only enough to make the video make sense in the HEIRS universe. The panel above, of the then-unnamed executioner, resonated in our heads rent-free. We kept asking ourselves ‘What’s going on in that executioner’s head?’ which spurred us to write and create the entire TALES FROM NOCTURNIA universe, which then became its own series! The executioner also got a name - BENONOCH.
That’s cool and all - but I know that as it’s in the behind the scenes notes in the TALES FROM NOCTURNIA graphic novel. Is there some other REALLY deep inside info that you’ve never shared before?
How about this? The music on this song is actually the THIRD set of music that was affiliated with this set of lyrics. Crazy, right?! The first set of music was written many many years ago by longtime friend and former bandmate of Matt’s, Asgrim Nunn. Asgrim showed Matt a piece he’d written, and within 1-2 hours the entire lyrical concept was written. That version never went anywhere, and consequently Asgrim pulled the music for potential use in another project.
The next set of music was written by Matt, when he and Corey Steger originally were discussing the HEIRS OF ISILDUR musical project idea (a few years before the illustrated novel / comic came to be). The music was solid, but wasn’t the right fit for the lyrics either. That being said, the music was still used in HEIRS releases. What song is that music used in? Kindred Spirits! How’s THAT for inside info!
