JAWS 50th Anniversary and the connection to BRUCE MCTOOTHERSON!
We give you a six degrees of separation concerning the movie and one of our breakout characters, + news about a special, limited BRUCE MCTOOTHERSON cover release (that's almost already SOLD OUT!)
Hey everyone! This weekend marks the 50th anniversary of one of the most iconic movies of all time - JAWS. #TeamINSYM’s STEPH CANNON is a huge fan of the franchise (and even has two published articles on it - linked at the bottom of this BLOG OF DESTINY). We wanted to share with you the ‘six degrees of separation’ from the MOVIE, to our MISFITZ CLUBHOUSE character: Bruce McTootherson! Keep reading for all the inside info, as well as a special offer from our webstore!
From Steph: ‘I’m not a collector of many things, but if it’s something Jaws related, I’m in. It’s been FIFTY years since the film came out, but my whole life of loving it, and having it lead me to the path of wanting to tell my own horrific stories. Here’s to 50 years, Jaws!’
So, how did Steph’s love of the movie spawn our MISFITZ CLUBHOUSE character?
Here’s where the six degrees of separation comes in:
The animatronic shark in the original JAWS movie is named BRUCE, after Stephen Spielberg’s entertainment lawyer (Look it up, this is true undeniable fact).
One fateful summer afternoon, Steph went to Build-A-Bear with her kids and made a shark stuffed animal in his honor (the animatronic shark, that is). (You can see the stuffed animal in the pics above).
Steph has a propensity for giving things silly names (i.e. a tree named ‘Mister Lemons’, her keyboard named ‘Mister Buttons’), and this stuffed animal, named:
BRUCE MCTOOTHERSON. While many made Matt chuckle, this one really stood out for its’ silliness and creativity. That stuffed animal sits in the background during our daily #TeamINSYM video calls… staring… glaring… with those beady little eyes of his. I see you Bruce…
After we’d already released MISFITZ CLUBHOUSE debut issue, we were spit-balling random ideas for future short stories, and somehow the thought of BRUCE MCTOOTHERSON being in the series, that already contains talking sloths and ferrets, was born.
But not just an any ol’ shark would do, he had to be a crime fighter, and a (sometimes) bumbling one at that, and thus BRUCE MCTOOTHERSON: ACQUATIC INVESTIGATOR came into existence! The rest is graphic novel history! ;-)
BRUCE, and our MISFITZ CLUBHOUSE STORIES, COVERS, and SPECIAL EDITION MERCH!
Bruce actually graced a variant cover for our second release: SHARKS DRAGONS & LITTLE RED WAGONS, which was done by the one and only PETER RAYMUNDO (former Disney animator extraordinaire, and current author). If you look close, you’ll also see him on Cover A for SD&LRW. He’s also on covers A and B for All The Shenanigans So Far!
Recently, during our Kickstarter campaign for ALL THE SHENANIGANS SO FAR (which contains ALL 11 Misfitz short stories we’ve ever done), we also included an ultra-limited edition of this Sharks Dragons & Little Red Wagons BRUCE cover as a METAL Virgin variant!
There are only 10 of these that will make it into circulation. At the time of this BLOG, there are only FOUR remaining. So, if you want to get your hands on this special edition of BRUCE (by Peter Raymundo), you need to go to our WEBSTORE and secure yours now!
THAT’S NOT ALL THE BRUCE THERE IS! Bruce has his own SHIRT, his own SOCKS, a PIN, and even a POKER CHIP! He appears in MULTIPLE STORIES in ALL THE SHENANIGANS SO FAR (his own story, Glitch in the Matrix, and Beach Bash Bonanza).
SPECIAL: In celebration of JAWS 50th, ANY (Physical) ORDERS FROM OUR WEBSTORE FOR THE NEXT WEEK (Through June 30th) will get a FREE Bruce McTootherson Game Token / Poker Chip!
