CHARACTER REVEALS for TATSUMI: The Serpent Mistress #1
Last week on the TATSUMI: THE SERPENT MISTRESS #1 PRE-LAUNCH page on KICKSTARTER, we started reveals for some of the characters you’ll be meeting along the way in Issue #1. Here’s who’s been revealed so far:
TATSUMI NAKIHANA
She's pursuing a path of retribution and revenge against the evil horde that left her kingdom (The YAMARAN EMPIRE from our story I AM QIDO) as nothing more than a trail of embers, ash, and corpses: The post-human DARK KONQUESTORS, and their vampire-like, spirit sucking accomplices: The SOUL RIPPERS.
Before she can do that, however, she must figure out her own path of survival in a world she didn't even know existed, aligning with the most unexpected of individuals in a swashbuckling, high seas adventure.
ADMIRAL DERINGER ASCOT
He's the Captain of the SIDESTALKER, a part-time merchant vessel, most times corsair/pirate ship that operates out of the Port of Alabassus. Acquiring riches, by hook or by crook, is his main objective. The Admiral lives for the sea, and any adventure that it may bestow upon him and his beloved ship.

There will be more CHARACTER BIOS, COVERS, and MERCH REVEALS upcoming! You’ll want to go FOLLOW the KICKSTARTER Pre-LAUNCH page, because that’s where the reveals will happen ***first***! There will be a NEW character tomorrow (Tuesday the 29th)! We hope you'll help us spread the word, and join us on LAUNCH DAY, May 20th!
WHAT ARE WE CONSUMING: The Do-OVER PODCAST
One of our favorite columns is WHAT ARE WE CONSUMING, where we get to talk about the MEDIA that crosses our eyes and ears. It could be movies, streaming TV, or in Matt’s case, METAL MUSIC. For Steph, audio books are the typical fare. Today she’s back for a DO-OVER… the podcast that is! Take it away, Steph!
********
By now, most of you know I’m an avid Podcast listener, and have several that I loyally listen to each week while I run. Though I’ve added in Audiobooks over the last two years, I still make time for the handful of podcasts I’m subscribed to. So this time around will be a little different, and for the first time I’ll be shouting out a podcast in my latest WAWC.
I’m going to age myself a bit here, but I’ve been a local radio listener my entire life. For the last few years, this has included a morning show that would play in the car taking my kids to school. For YEARS I listened to these guys every single morning. It was part of my routine, and a way to start my day off right. It was like a comfortable blanket.
Last December, I found out via their Instagram accounts that they were suddenly and unexpectedly laid off. I was crestfallen. I couldn’t believe that these people who were a part of my daily life for years were now just inexplicably gone. I even lamented my sadness over this to Matt, who was quick to predict that they’d probably be back with their own podcast or show of some sort.
Sure enough, right after the new year, they announced they were starting their own podcast called The Do-Over Podcast. This was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to them (and me as a listener).
Hosts Drew Hyatt, Elliott Jams, and Barbress Jess produce a weekly podcast that covers much of the similar topics such as news, pop culture, and debates, but with more freedom to do whatever the heck they want. Though there’s regular segments, they also will go off on random tangents, bring on guest personalities, and are constantly finding ways to up their game and add new features.
Drew and Elliott also host a separate weekly podcast along with “Fast Eddie” Edward Raus called Taps and Takes, which focuses solely on nerd and sports news. That’s right….two of my favorite topics, in one podcast. One of my favorite parts of the old radio shows was when they would focus Friday mornings on sports news, especially during football season when they would lament (and I would commiserate) over how well (or not well) their fantasy teams and real-life teams were doing. These dudes also play D&D, so it does my dork heart good to have this in my ears every week.
But back to The Do-Over. Drew, Elliott, and Jess have been friends for a while, so their dynamic together is comfortable and hilarious. They’re also local to me (they’re in Fresno, Ca, and I’m 45 min south), so hearing them bring up local topics is always entertaining in a comforting way. Don’t let that deter you, though, you don’t have to be a Central Californian to enjoy. Their personalities are all varied, so it never feels like you’re listening to one hive mind. I do have to admit though, that I honestly adore Jess. She’s authentically herself in a way that’s so refreshing, that I just find myself wanting to be her friend. Honestly, her presence is needed because she brings a nice dose of girliness to what would otherwise be a very dude-centric show.
If you couldn’t already tell, I’m a fan for life now, and their show is proof that sometimes unfortunate situations in our life can turn out to be immense blessings that lead to bigger and better opportunities.
